MIT OpenCourseWare offers this graduate-level civil and environmental engineering course on the geotechnical side of hazardous waste management. It covers the definition and regulatory framework for hazardous waste, waste characteristics, geochemistry, and contaminant transport, then moves into the design and operation of land-based containment structures including landfills, impoundments, and mine-waste disposal facilities. A second strand covers site characterization and remediation: Superfund law, preliminary site assessment, site investigation techniques, remediation technologies, and long-term monitoring requirements. Materials are drawn from MIT's course 1.34 and include the full set of course materials as published on OCW, free to access under a Creative Commons license with no certificate offered. The course suits students with a geotechnical engineering background who want the regulatory and design fundamentals behind real contaminated-site cleanups.
