Weather and Climate Laboratory
MIT's undergraduate course 12.307 uses hands-on laboratory projects to illustrate the dynamical and physical principles behind the general circulation of the atmosphere and ocean and the day to day sequence of weather events. The material parallels the textbook Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate Dynamics by John Marshall and R. Alan Plumb, and students work through experiments and problem sets that connect rotating-tank demonstrations and observational data to the underlying fluid dynamics. Course materials published through MIT OpenCourseWare include lecture notes, lab handouts, and assignments, letting learners follow the same sequence of projects used in the on-campus class. The course is aimed at undergraduates studying atmospheric and oceanic science and assumes some prior physics and math background. No certificate is offered, as with other MIT OpenCourseWare materials, but all readings and problem sets are free to access.
