This MIT OpenCourseWare course, originally numbered 13.811 in the Department of Ocean Engineering (now 2.067 under Mechanical Engineering), covers the mechanics of vibrating and wave-bearing structures. Topics include the foundations of 3D elasticity, fluid and elastic wave equations, elastic and plastic waves in rods and beams, waves in plates, and the dynamics and acoustics of cylindrical shells. Later sessions address acoustic fluid effects such as radiation and scattering by submerged plates and shells, interaction between structural elements, and the response of plates and shells to high-intensity loads, including dynamic plasticity, fracture, and damage from implosive and impact loading. Materials include lecture notes and problem sets typical of MIT OCW graduate courses, free to access with no certificate offered. It suits students in ocean or mechanical engineering with a background in continuum mechanics who want a rigorous treatment of structural dynamics under extreme loading.
