African American History: From Emancipation to the Present
This Yale College course, taught by Jonathan Holloway and recorded for Open Yale Courses in Spring 2010, traces the African American experience from 1863 to the present. Lectures cover the end of the Civil War and Reconstruction, migration to northern cities, the rise of the modern civil rights movement, and the decades since. The course examines the competing visions of Booker T. Washington, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X, treating their disagreements as central to the story rather than footnotes to it.
