A graduate-level continuation of MIT's atomic and optical physics sequence, following 8.421. The course covers non-classical states of light including squeezed states, multi-photon processes and Raman scattering, coherence phenomena such as level crossings, quantum beats, double resonance and superradiance, and the trapping and cooling of atoms through laser cooling and atom optics. It also treats spectroscopy of trapped atoms and ions, classical and quantum collision theory, ultracold collisions, and the experimental methods used to study them. Offered through MIT OpenCourseWare, the materials include lecture notes and problem sets drawn from an actual MIT graduate subject, free to access with no certificate offered. The subject assumes background from Atomic and Optical Physics I and targets students preparing for research in atomic, molecular and optical physics.
