MIT OpenCourseWare's OCW Scholar version of Biological Chemistry I, taught by Professor JoAnne Stubbe and Professor John Essigmann, covers the chemical and physical properties of the cell and its building blocks, with emphasis on protein structure, catalysis, and the organic and inorganic cofactors that enable chemical transformations inside cells. Metabolic pathways covered include glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, fatty acid synthesis and degradation, the pentose phosphate pathway, the Krebs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. The course is organized into three modules, each built from lecture videos, textbook readings, lecture notes or storyboards, and problem sets with solutions. Dr. Bogdan Fedeles walks through problem-solving videos for selected homework problems. Designed for independent study and modeled closely on MIT's residential course, it estimates 10 to 15 hours of weekly work including lectures, recitations, readings, and exams.
