MIT OpenCourseWare's second graduate structures course covers advanced topics in structural design and building envelopes. It expands on determinant and indeterminate systems to address long-span and high-rise structures, with coverage of reinforced concrete, steel, and engineered wood design, plus an introduction to tensile systems. The exterior envelope is examined through classification of systems, performance attributes, and advanced manufacturing technologies. The course builds on 4.462, the first graduate structures course, and offers an expanded treatment of material also taught in the undergraduate course 4.440. Materials follow the standard MIT OCW format of lecture notes, assignments, and readings drawn from the graduate architecture curriculum, free to access with no certificate offered. Suited to students who already have foundational structures knowledge and want to move into complex load systems and envelope engineering.
