An advanced MIT OpenCourseWare subject in fluid and continuum mechanics, developed for chemical engineering students. The syllabus covers kinematics, macroscopic balances for linear and angular momentum, stress tensors, creeping flows and the lubrication approximation, the boundary layer approximation, linear stability theory, and simple turbulent flows. Materials include lecture notes, problem sets, and exams as published through MIT OpenCourseWare, free to access with no certificate offered. The course assumes prior background in fluid mechanics and builds toward the mathematical tools used to analyze viscous flow, stability, and transitions to turbulence. It suits students who already know the basics of continuum mechanics and want the derivations and approximations that underlie chemical engineering fluid problems, rather than an introductory survey.
