Business Models for Community Networked Geothermal Heating and Cooling
Don Lessard, speaking as part of MIT's January 2025 IAP course on Geothermal Energy Networks (taught with HEET), examines the business and financing challenges of scaling up networked geothermal heating and cooling systems. He walks through the structural obstacles that stand in the way of expanding ground-source thermal networks beyond pilot projects, including who owns the infrastructure, how costs get recovered from participating buildings, and what utility or municipal models could make community-scale geothermal financially viable. The session treats the technology itself as largely solved and focuses instead on the economic and institutional design needed to deploy it widely, drawing on MIT's collaboration with the nonprofit HEET, which has worked directly with gas utilities on thermal network pilots. It is a short, focused session aimed at students and practitioners already familiar with the basic geothermal network concept.
