Constructing and Commissioning of a Geothermal Energy Network
Eric Bosworth of Eversource describes the real-world build-out of a geothermal energy network (GEN) in Framingham, Massachusetts, a project developed in partnership with HEET as part of MIT's IAP course on geothermal energy networks. Drawing on his role overseeing the project, Bosworth walks through the practical stages of turning a networked geothermal design into an operating utility system: trenching and piping the shared ground loop, connecting individual buildings, commissioning the system, and the early lessons from running it. The talk sits within a broader course aimed at utility engineers and planners exploring geothermal networks as an alternative to gas distribution, and this session focuses specifically on construction logistics and commissioning rather than theory or policy. It gives a grounded, utility-side account of what building this kind of infrastructure actually involves, including the coordination between a utility and a nonprofit partner.
