How GENs Can Meet Environmental Justice Priorities
Chris Rabe, speaking as part of MIT's IAP course RES.ENV-007 Geothermal Energy Networks: Transforming Our Thermal Energy System, lays out how geothermal energy networks (GENs) can address environmental justice priorities in the communities where they are built. He reviews the framework HEET and MIT have used to identify environmental justice concerns tied to district thermal energy systems, walks through specific priorities raised by affected residents, and outlines next steps for integrating those priorities into network design and deployment. The talk treats environmental justice as one practical input among several engineering and policy constraints on GEN rollout, not as the course's organizing theory. It fits into a broader session series on thermal energy infrastructure, with this installment focused squarely on equity considerations in siting and benefit distribution for geothermal networks replacing gas utility systems.
