Networked Geothermal: The European Experience
Sanjeev Kumar, Head of Policy at the European Geothermal Energy Council, lays out how networked geothermal heating and cooling has developed across Europe. Part of MIT's RES.ENV-007 Geothermal Energy Networks course from IAP 2025, the session covers the policy and market conditions that have let geothermal district networks expand in European cities, the regulatory incentives behind that growth, and the technical and financing hurdles still facing wider adoption. Kumar draws on his work with the European Geothermal Energy Council to compare European approaches with the nascent US market, pointing to specific examples of successful network deployment and the policy levers that made them possible. The talk is aimed at students and practitioners thinking about how to scale thermal energy networks as a decarbonization tool, treating Europe's experience as a working case study rather than a hypothetical.
