MIT OpenCourseWare offers this introduction to how neurons and other excitable cells build the nervous system. The course covers the biophysical properties of excitable membranes, synaptic transmission, neurochemistry, and neurodevelopment, then applies these principles to information processing in simple neural circuits and the visual system. Materials include lecture notes, problem sets, and readings drawn from MIT's Brain and Cognitive Sciences curriculum, letting students work through the same content assigned on campus. The course assumes some background in biology and is aimed at students building toward more advanced neuroscience or systems-level study. As with other MIT OpenCourseWare offerings, there are no lectures on video for this particular course, but the full set of written materials is freely downloadable and the course carries a Creative Commons license permitting reuse. No certificate is offered.
