MIT OpenCourseWare offers this advanced graduate course on the physics, modeling, and technology of compound semiconductor devices, focused primarily on III-V materials. Topics include the properties, preparation, and processing of compound semiconductors, the theory and practice of heterojunctions, quantum structures, and pseudomorphic strained layers, and device families such as metal-semiconductor field effect transistors (MESFETs), heterojunction field effect transistors (HFETs), heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs), photodiodes, and vertical- and in-plane-cavity laser diodes. Course materials include lecture notes and problem sets covering both device physics and circuit-level applications in electronic, optoelectronic, and photonic systems. Materials are freely available for self-study under MIT's OpenCourseWare license, with no certificate offered. The course suits students who already have a background in semiconductor device fundamentals and want to move into compound and heterostructure devices.
