Computation Structures
MIT's introduction to the engineering of digital systems, moving from MOS transistors up through logic gates, combinational and sequential circuits, finite-state machines, and complete computer systems. The course builds each abstraction layer on the one below it, showing how hardware and software mechanisms combine in real design examples. Materials include problem sets and lab exercises, and the capstone project has each student complete a gate-level design for a reduced instruction set computer (RISC) processor over the semester. It is a required course for MIT EECS undergraduates and serves as the foundation for later work in digital design, computer architecture, and systems. Offered free through MIT OpenCourseWare with lecture materials, assignments, and labs, though there is no institutional credit or certificate attached to self-study.
