MIT OpenCourseWare offers this advanced design course on developing implantable and injectable medical devices for specific clinical problems. Students work in teams to design an FDA Class III device or a combination product that pairs a device with drugs or biologics, targeting any of the body's 78 organs. The curriculum covers a systematic engineering design process, the science underlying novel treatments, and the practical steps for preparing an FDA application to run clinical trials. It also addresses the business side, including how to start a company to bring the device to patients. Course materials include lecture notes, design project assignments, and team-based case studies typical of MIT's mechanical engineering and health sciences programs. No certificate is offered, but all materials are free to access under MIT's open license.
