MIT OpenCourseWare's introduction to dynamics and vibrations of lumped-parameter mechanical systems. The course covers kinematics, force-momentum formulation for particles and rigid bodies in planar motion, work-energy concepts, virtual displacements and virtual work, and Lagrange's equations. It moves into linearization of equations of motion, linear stability analysis, and free and forced vibration of multi-degree-of-freedom systems using matrix eigenvalue methods. Numerical methods and MATLAB are introduced for solving dynamics and vibrations problems. Materials include lecture notes, assignments, and exams from MIT's Mechanical Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering departments, published under a Creative Commons license. No certificate is offered, as with all MIT OpenCourseWare materials, but the full set of course materials is freely available for self-study.
