MIT OpenCourseWare's introduction to dynamics and vibration of lumped-parameter mechanical systems covers three-dimensional particle kinematics, force-momentum formulation for particle systems and rigid bodies, and Newton-Euler equations. The course builds up the work-energy variational approach, virtual displacements, and Lagrange's equations for particles and rigid bodies, then moves into linearization of equations of motion and linear stability analysis. The second half addresses free and forced vibration of linear damped multi-degree-of-freedom systems, with applications to ocean and civil engineering structures such as tension leg platforms. Originally offered by MIT's Department of Ocean Engineering as 13.013J, the subject later merged with 2.003 under Mechanical Engineering. Materials include course notes, problem sets, and exams typical of MIT OCW offerings, free to access with no certificate attached.
