MIT OpenCourseWare offers this materials science course examining how microstructure governs the performance of electrical, optical, and magnetic devices. The device-motivated approach covers electrical conductivity and doping, transistors, photodetectors and photovoltaics, luminescence, light emitting diodes, lasers, optical phenomena, photonics, ferromagnetism, and magnetoresistance, tying each physical phenomenon to a real emerging technology rather than treating it in the abstract. Materials include lecture notes and assignments from MIT's curriculum, freely downloadable, with no certificate offered since this is a static OCW publication rather than an instructor-led session. Suited to students who already have a foundation in solid-state physics or materials science and want to see how that theory translates into working electronic, photonic, and magnetic components.
