Engineering Mechanics I
An MIT OpenCourseWare introduction to the mechanics of materials and structures, aimed at civil and environmental engineering students. The course covers the physical properties and fundamental laws governing how materials and structures behave under load, building on calculus from 18.01, 18.02, and eventually differential equations in 18.03. Emphasis falls on physical understanding rather than pure computation: why a beam bends the way it does, why a truss carries load the way it does, before applying that understanding to design problems. Materials include lecture notes, problem sets, and exams typical of MIT OCW offerings, published under a Creative Commons license and free to access with no certificate involved. It suits students who have finished introductory calculus and want a grounding in structural and material behavior before tackling more advanced engineering coursework.
