MIT OpenCourseWare presents the second course in a two-part sequence on finite element theory and methods for linear and nonlinear analysis. Lessons build finite element discretizations from continuum mechanics equations, conservation laws, virtual work, and variational principles, and cover stability, accuracy, and convergence of the resulting procedures. Applications span solid and structural mechanics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, and fluid-structure interaction problems. Coursework includes homework problem sets and a student-selected term project carried out using ADINA, a general-purpose finite element analysis program, giving students hands-on practice applying the theory to realistic engineering problems. Materials come from MIT's mechanical engineering curriculum and are aimed at advanced students already familiar with basic finite element concepts. No certificate is offered, consistent with MIT OpenCourseWare's open publication of course materials.
