This MIT OpenCourseWare graduate seminar centers on classic papers in algebraic topology, named for the late MIT professor Daniel Kan. Each student selects three papers in consultation with the instructor, delivers one or two talks per paper, reads everything presented by classmates, and writes reactions to those readings. The course materials include the syllabus, a list of the classic papers covered, and student presentation topics rather than recorded lectures, reflecting its format as a literature and discussion seminar rather than a lecture course. Beyond algebraic topology specialists, the seminar is pitched as useful to students working in symplectic geometry, representation theory, and combinatorics, since the papers chosen often bridge into those areas. As with other MIT OCW offerings, all materials are free to access online under an open license, with no certificate attached.
