Holographic Imaging
MAS.450 is MIT's laboratory course on holography, taught from a scientific and analytical angle rather than as an art elective. The curriculum moves from interference and diffraction through imaging of single points to full three-dimensional display, with students building their own laboratory setups and making actual holograms as they go. Mathematical tools accompany each stage so the physical behavior of light in these setups can be predicted rather than just observed. The course satisfies MIT's Institute Laboratory Requirement, so it is built around hands-on experimentation and the scientific method rather than lecture alone. Along the way it touches optics, chemistry, computer science, electrical engineering, and human visual perception, since modern holography draws on all of them. Materials come from MIT OpenCourseWare and include the lab-based syllabus and course structure used in MIT's Media Arts and Sciences program.
