MIT OpenCourseWare offers this ocean engineering course on the fundamental equations of fluid mechanics and their application to marine hydrodynamics. Lessons cover conservation of mass, momentum and energy, lift and drag forces, laminar and turbulent flows, dimensional analysis, added mass, and linear surface waves, including wave velocities and real sea wave behavior. Later material addresses wave forces on structures, seakeeping analysis for ships and offshore platforms, and geophysical fluid dynamics such as ocean salinity, temperature and density distributions, heat balance, major circulations, geostrophic flows, and wind stress effects. The course includes descriptions of laboratory experiments in ocean engineering, covering ship resistance and model testing, lift and drag on submerged bodies, and vehicle propulsion. Materials are drawn from MIT's course 13.012 and made available free through MIT OpenCourseWare under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered.
