Industrial Organization I
MIT OpenCourseWare offers this PhD-level course in industrial organization, covering the theoretical and empirical foundations economics doctoral students need for thesis research in the field. The course integrates formal models of firm behavior, market structure, and strategic interaction with empirical studies testing those models against real industry data. Materials include lecture notes, problem sets, and a reading list drawing on foundational and current journal articles in the field. Topics typically span monopoly and oligopoly pricing, product differentiation, entry and exit, collusion, and vertical relationships between firms. The course is taught at MIT and is aimed at economics PhD students and researchers in related fields who want a rigorous grounding in modern industrial organization theory and its empirical testing. As with other MIT OCW offerings, all course materials are free to access and there is no certificate.
