MIT OpenCourseWare's International Trade examines why nations trade, what they trade, and who benefits from that trade. The course works through the standard models used to explain trade patterns, then turns to why governments restrict or regulate trade anyway, covering tariffs, quotas, and other policy tools. Topics include the link between trade and economic growth, the effect of trade on wage inequality, multinational firms and foreign direct investment, international trade agreements, and current trade policy disputes. Materials include lecture notes, problem sets, and readings drawn from academic economics, following MIT's standard OpenCourseWare format. No enrollment or certificate is offered; the course is meant for self-study or use as a reference by students and instructors. It suits anyone wanting a rigorous, textbook-level grounding in trade theory and policy rather than a general-interest overview.
