Introduction to Integrated Design
MIT's introductory architecture studio moves through a sequence of short design exercises rather than lectures, each one built around a different discipline that feeds into architectural practice: structures, sustainability, architectural history, and the visual arts. Students work in multiple media, from drawing to physical models, and each problem pairs a single conceptual focus with a specific exploration or presentation technique, so the course doubles as an introduction to studio methods themselves. Materials come from MIT OpenCourseWare and include assignment briefs and studio problem sets rather than recorded lectures. The course assumes no architecture background and is meant as a first exposure to how architects think through a design question using multiple lenses at once, building toward the kind of integrated thinking that later, more specialized studios take for granted. No certificate is offered since this is an open courseware release.
