Introduction to Sculpture
MIT OpenCourseWare offers this studio class covering the fundamentals of sculpture, including site, context, process, the psychology and aesthetics of objects, and the relationship between an object and the body. Students work through issues of interpretation and audience interaction across a semester of studio assignments. The course introduces both traditional materials, such as wood, metal, and plaster, and non-traditional ones, including fabric, latex, found objects, and rubber. Course materials include the syllabus, assignment descriptions, and studio project briefs as published by MIT. It is aimed at introductory-level students with no prior sculpture experience, emphasizing hands-on making over lecture, and treating the object itself, its physical presence and viewer interaction, as the central subject of study throughout the term.
