This MIT OpenCourseWare resource teaches the two Japanese phonetic syllabaries used alongside kanji. For hiragana, it provides stroke order videos, pronunciation guides, and vocabulary for each character, plus reading and listening audio exercises, handouts on building words and sentences, interactive quizzes testing character recognition, and printable writing worksheets. Katakana materials cover pronunciation and vocabulary, reading and listening exercises, recognition quizzes, and practice worksheets. The materials were developed for MIT's Japanese language curriculum and are designed for students of all levels, usable either as a standalone self-study track or as a supplement to classroom instruction. There is no instructor interaction or certificate, just the self-paced character-by-character materials themselves, covering everything needed to read and write both kana systems before moving on to kanji study.
