An MIT OpenCourseWare introduction to the mechanics of solids, covering how structures deform and carry load. The course builds around three recurring threads in any mechanics problem: the geometry of deformation and conditions of geometric fit, the forces acting on and within a structure, and the material properties that relate those forces to the resulting motion or deformation. Topics include stress and strain, axial loading, torsion, bending of beams, and the behavior of trusses and frames under load. Materials include lecture notes, problem sets with solutions, and exams drawn from MIT's mechanical engineering curriculum, letting learners work through the same assignments given to MIT undergraduates. No enrollment or fee is required to access the materials, though there is no certificate offered through OpenCourseWare.
