Microfinance in South India: The SELCO Case
Yale professor Douglas W. Rae leads a class session from Capitalism: Success, Crisis and Reform on the SELCO business case, a distributed solar power venture aimed at rural Indian households. Rae walks students through analytical tools for evaluating the case, including SWOT analysis and Porter's Five Forces, applying them to SELCO's operations. The discussion covers whether SELCO's model can scale, its difficulty breaking into higher margin markets, and its financing arrangement with a local microfinance institution that helps rural customers afford the equipment. Students participate directly, proposing changes to SELCO's business strategy and debating which fixes might actually work. The session is part of Rae's larger course examining capitalism's successes, crises, and reform efforts, recorded at Yale in fall 2009 and drawn from the Open Yale Courses archive.
