Near-Surface Geophysical Imaging
MIT OpenCourseWare offers this graduate course on seismic imaging methods used to correct for shallow near-surface effects, the top 0 to 500 meters, that complicate seismic data processing in land-based oil and gas exploration. The course covers both conventional near-surface correction techniques, such as statics corrections, and advanced imaging technologies developed in academia and industry, including wave-equation datuming and tomographic methods. Materials include lecture notes, problem sets, and readings drawn from academic and industry research, following MIT's standard OCW format. The course assumes graduate-level background in geophysics and is aimed at students and practitioners working on seismic exploration data. There is no instructor interaction or certificate, consistent with MIT OCW's open publication model, but the full set of course materials is freely downloadable under a Creative Commons license.
