Negotiation and Conflict Management
MIT Sloan's graduate course on negotiation theory, strategies, and styles applied to workplace situations. Structured around eleven weekly class meetings, each covering a distinct topic, the course pairs theory with role-playing simulations covering difficult scenarios such as abrasiveness, racism, sexism, whistle-blowing, and emergencies. Students also study conflict management from both first-party and third-party perspectives, including mediation, investigation, and arbitration. Course materials include readings, four self-assessments, weekly journal writing, three short papers, and analysis assignments where students evaluate real negotiations. Provided through MIT OpenCourseWare, the syllabus and assignments are free to access, though there is no certificate. The course draws on Sloan School negotiation faculty and is built for repeated practice rather than passive listening, with every session structured around a specific negotiation skill.
