MIT OpenCourseWare offers this introduction to programming and numerical methods built for mechanical engineering students. The course starts with basic programming concepts, variable types, data structures, and flow control, then covers linear algebra and probability before moving into numerical techniques: interpolation, least squares, statistical regression, numerical integration, solving linear and nonlinear equations, and ordinary differential equations. Both deterministic and probabilistic approaches are treated. Examples are drawn from robotics, dynamics, and structural analysis, grounding the math in mechanical engineering problems rather than abstract exercises. Assignments require MATLAB programming, giving students hands-on practice implementing each method.
