Private Pilot Ground School
MIT's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics offers this three-day ground school, recorded during the Independent Activities Period in January 2019, aimed at students preparing for the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Test. Lecture sessions cover airplane aerodynamics, aircraft systems, navigation, meteorology, aircraft ownership and maintenance, aircraft performance, and an introduction to multi-engine and jet aircraft. Materials are published through MIT OpenCourseWare under a Creative Commons license, including video lectures and topic notes that mirror the structure of a real ground school course. The pace is compressed, built for an intensive three-day format rather than a full semester, but the topic coverage matches what a private pilot candidate needs to know before sitting the FAA written exam.
