Quantum Physics III
MIT's continuation of the 8.05-8.06 quantum mechanics sequence, covering time-independent approximation methods, the structure of one- and two-electron atoms, charged particles in a magnetic field, scattering theory, and time-dependent perturbation theory. The course builds directly on units and formalism developed in Quantum Physics II, extending the toolkit toward problems drawn from atomic and modern physics. As part of the coursework, students research and write a paper connecting material from both 8.05 and 8.06 to a topic of their choosing. Materials available through MIT OpenCourseWare include lecture notes, problem sets, and exams, offered free under a Creative Commons license with no certificate attached. This is advanced undergraduate physics, assuming solid grounding in earlier quantum mechanics coursework, and is best suited to students continuing directly from the prior course rather than newcomers to the subject.
