A graduate-level MIT course covering advanced techniques for solving the differential and integral equations that arise in physics and engineering problems, including perturbation methods, asymptotic expansions, boundary layer theory, WKB approximations, and transform techniques. The course is built around problem sets that push students to construct approximate analytic solutions to equations that cannot be solved exactly, sharpening intuition alongside formal technique. Materials on MIT OpenCourseWare include full lecture notes, assignment sets, and exams from the course as taught at MIT, with no textbook substitute required to follow the sequence. The course is aimed at strengthening independent mathematical reasoning in students who already have a solid grounding in differential equations and complex analysis. As with all MIT OpenCourseWare offerings, the materials are free to access under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered.
