Quantum Physics III
Quantum Mechanics III is the capstone of MIT's undergraduate quantum sequence, 8.06, covering exact analytic techniques and approximation methods for real physical systems. Topics include two-dimensional electron systems, the fine structure of hydrogen, the physics of lasers, and particle scattering theory. Students work through lecture notes, problem sets, and exams that build on the first two courses in the sequence to analyze increasingly complex quantum systems. Material is provided through MIT OpenCourseWare, including assignments and exam materials used in the actual MIT physics curriculum, free to access with no certificate offered. The course assumes familiarity with the earlier quantum mechanics courses and linear algebra, and it aims to leave students able to model systems physicists actually study, not just idealized textbook cases like the infinite square well.
