This MIT OpenCourseWare course comes from the product development track of MIT's System Design and Management Program, developed with the Center for Innovation in Product Development. It covers how to formulate measures of system performance and quality characteristics, identify noise factors that degrade them, and synthesize design concepts that hold up under that noise. Students learn parameter design, active control, and tolerance selection as methods for reducing noise effects, along with experimental and analytical ways to estimate a design's robustness. The course situates these techniques within the broader product development process, aimed at students who will lead development teams applying them. Materials include the course's lecture content and assignments as published on MIT OCW, free to access under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered.
