Scuba
MIT's introductory scuba course prepares students for beginning diver certification through paired weekly sessions: a classroom lecture and a pool practicum. Classroom material covers diving physics, equipment, safety procedures, and dive planning needed to pass the written certification exam. Pool sessions build water skills in progressive stages, starting with basic breathing and mask clearing and advancing to more demanding maneuvers, so that difficult skills become manageable through repetition. Entry requires passing MIT's swim test and demonstrating comfort in the water before the course begins. By the end, students attempt the certification exam required to become recognized open-water divers. Materials are provided through MIT OpenCourseWare under its standard open license, including readings and skill progressions, though the pool facility and in-person instruction are specific to MIT's own program.
