Structural Mechanics
MIT OpenCourseWare's undergraduate course on structural mechanics covers small and moderately large deflections of beams, columns, cables, and shafts, along with elastic and plastic buckling of columns, thin walled sections, and plates. It presents exact and approximate analysis methods, energy methods, and the principle of virtual work, then applies them to failure analysis. Worked examples span civil, mechanical, offshore, and ship structures, including case studies on ship collision and grounding. Materials include lecture notes, assignments, and exams from MIT's Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, freely downloadable under a Creative Commons license. No certificate is offered, but the full set of course materials supports independent study of structural analysis at an advanced undergraduate level.
