System Safety
System Safety is an MIT OpenCourseWare course from Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society covering how safety-critical systems are designed, analyzed, and operated. Lectures work through the nature of risk, formal accident and human error models, and the root causes of accidents before moving into system and software hazard analysis, fault tolerance, and designing for safety. Later sessions address human-machine interaction, verification methods, and how organizations build and sustain a safety culture, plus management practices for safety-critical projects. Students complete a class project that involves the high-level system design and hazard analysis of an actual safety-critical system, applying the course's methods rather than just reading about them. Materials are published freely by MIT OpenCourseWare under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered, aimed at an advanced audience already familiar with engineering systems.
