This MIT OpenCourseWare course covers the interdisciplinary methods used to design and deliver complex systems. It works through the full development cycle: capturing customer needs, translating them into documented requirements, and carrying those requirements through design synthesis, testing, and validation. The course ties these practical steps to underlying theory, drawing on decision theory, statistics, and optimization to justify tradeoffs among performance, cost, schedule, and manufacturability. It also surveys commercially used systems engineering techniques rather than staying purely academic. Materials include lecture notes, assignments, and readings from MIT's Engineering Systems Division, free to access with no enrollment cost. The course targets students who already have some engineering background and want a structured framework for managing the complexity of large technical projects, from requirements documents to final system validation.
