MIT OpenCourseWare offers this survey of the technical foundations behind moving people and goods. The course covers road vehicle engineering and internal combustion engines, then moves into batteries, motors, and electric and hybrid powertrains before turning to urban and high speed rail, water vessels, and aircraft types and aerodynamics. Later sessions take up radar, navigation, GPS, and GIS, giving students a quantitative look at the systems that coordinate modern transportation networks. Aimed at upper level undergraduates, the course pairs lecture material with a final project in which students investigate a transportation technology topic of their own choosing. Materials are drawn from MIT's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and are freely available through OCW under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate attached.
