Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Materials
MIT OpenCourseWare offers this materials science course covering how thermodynamics and kinetics govern the behavior of engineering materials. The thermodynamics portion works through the laws of thermodynamics, solution theory, and the construction and reading of equilibrium phase diagrams. The kinetics portion covers diffusion mechanisms, phase transformations, and how microstructure develops during processing. Materials include lecture notes, problem sets, and exams typical of MIT's OCW offerings, letting students work through the same assignments given to enrolled undergraduates. The course sits at an advanced level, assuming prior exposure to materials science fundamentals, and builds toward being able to predict how a material's internal structure and properties change as it is heated, cooled, or alloyed.
