MIT's Comparative Media Studies/Writing program offers this course on reading and writing autobiographical narrative, covering both full-length memoir and shorter personal essays. Students read autobiographically-inspired nonfiction and fiction alongside their own writing assignments, examining how a life narrative takes shape in relation to family, education, work, media, and community. The course asks students to consider how personal identity connects to group belonging, ethical values, and social responsibility, using their own experiences, including time at MIT, as raw material for craft. Materials include the reading list and writing assignments from MIT OpenCourseWare, free to access without enrollment or certificate.
