This MIT graduate course teaches methods for designing multi-million-gate CMOS VLSI chips using high-level synthesis tools alongside standard commercial EDA software. The focus sits on modular, robust design practices: building reusable modules, achieving correctness by construction, exploring architectural tradeoffs, and meeting area, timing, and power constraints across both standard cell and FPGA implementation frameworks. The course is project-oriented, so students work through the full design flow rather than isolated exercises, applying synthesis and verification tools to real chip-scale problems. Materials on MIT OpenCourseWare include lecture notes, project assignments, and readings covering the design methodologies discussed. As with other OCW offerings, there is no instructor interaction, grading, or certificate; the content is provided free for self-study under MIT's OpenCourseWare license.
