YALE · American History: From Emancipation to the Present · LECTURE 15

Yale professor Jonathan Holloway continues his American History survey (AFAM 162, Emancipation to the Present) with a lecture complicating the textbook image of Martin Luther King Jr. Rather than resting on the familiar excerpts of the 1963 March on Washington speech, Holloway walks through King's Letter from Birmingham Jail, the political maneuvering behind Kennedy's civil rights bill, and the organizing that produced the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. He argues that the movement's popular memory has flattened King into a single soothing moment, and uses these episodes to restore the harder political conflict surrounding him. The lecture runs through six chapters, from introduction to final thoughts, closing with a reassessment of the I Have a Dream speech itself. Recorded at Yale in Spring 2010, it is part of the freely available Open Yale Courses series.
