YALE · American History: From Emancipation to the Present · LECTURE 17

Yale historian Jonathan Holloway continues his account of the civil rights movement's turn between 1964 and 1966, part of his course American History: From Emancipation to the Present. He traces the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party's fight to seat delegates at the 1964 Democratic National Convention, Bloody Sunday and the Selma to Montgomery march, and the signing of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The lecture then turns to the Watts riots in Los Angeles that same summer, connecting the growing militancy there to rhetoric shifting nationwide and to the escalating war in Vietnam. Holloway closes by previewing the Lowndes County Freedom Organization, the group that became the first Black Panther Party, and Stokely Carmichael's changing direction for the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. Chapter markers divide the lecture into Freedom Summer, King's voter registration push, and the Voting Rights Act itself.
