Intermediate Heat and Mass Transfer
A 12-unit MIT Mechanical Engineering subject (2.51) covering heat and mass transfer at a deeper analytical level than the introductory Thermal Fluids Engineering I and II sequence. The course assumes those prerequisites and builds on them with rigorous derivation-based treatment rather than reliance on empirical correlations, covering topics often skipped or lightly treated at the undergraduate level. It is aimed at advanced undergraduates with a strong interest in thermal science as well as graduate students encountering heat transfer for the first time. MIT OpenCourseWare provides the course materials, including problem sets and lecture content, following the standard OCW model of free access to materials with no certificate offered. The emphasis throughout is on analytical methods for solving heat and mass transfer problems of greater complexity than those found in typical thermal fluids courses.
